The Hustle Culture Trap: What My Brain Map Taught Me About Rest, Transitions, & Burnout
This summer, I set an intention to become more grounded in my everyday life.
This was an attempt to prepare myself for the upcoming school year, where I knew I’d be experiencing some major shifts to my schedule. I’m about to be balancing school, an internship, and an almost full-time job. On top of that, I’ve been learning neurofeedback and will officially start taking clients in August! (Subtle promo: Schedule a consultation with me and let’s see if neurofeedback is a good fit for you!)
Safe to say, I have a lot going on. And as a naturally ambitious person, building my career and success are things I deeply value. I knew I needed to use the summer to ground myself firmly in those values.
...Except I didn’t do the best job of it at first.
Back in June when summer was just kicking off, and lets be real, summer has only just begun, so I still have until September to practice this, I found myself constantly struggling during transitions. I’d jump straight from one task to the next without taking a moment for a quick box breath or a 5-finger trace. I kept telling myself, "I don't have time for a 2-minute breather."
That’s exactly where I got into trouble. I got stuck in a hustle mindset, something I never thought would happen to me.
Maybe I’m your classic Gen Z who "doesn’t want to work," or maybe I'm just part of a generation trying not to fall victim to the toxic hustle culture that leaves so many people in a state of chronic burnout. Despite knowing better, I was heading straight down that path anyway.
Does any of this sound familiar?
You lie down to sleep, but your brain suddenly boots up a massive to-do list.
You constantly feel "wired but tired" throughout the day.
You jump frantically from one task to the next without giving yourself a single breather.
You feel a prickle of guilt or anxiety the second you try to sit still and do nothing.
If you nodded along, your nervous system is stuck in the same loop mine was. I had convinced myself I just needed better discipline or more hours in the day to finally chill out. But my brain map revealed something wild, my nervous system was quite literally broadcasting ‘work mode’ the second I closed my eyes.
The Turning Point: My Brain Map
Then, I got my neurofeedback brain map done. It exposed exactly what I had been driving myself toward, a nervous system stuck in burnout.
The map laid out the paradox perfectly:
During the day with my eyes open, elevated frontal alpha meant my brain was constantly trying to chill out and relax when I actually needed focus and executive functioning.
When I closed my eyes to finally sleep, high low-beta flooded my brain, keeping my nervous system in a state of focus instead of powering off.
Before the brain map, I was constantly wondering why I couldn’t "just relax." Seeing the actual data took away that shame. It wasn't a discipline issue or a character flaw, my brain was physically stuck in a loop. Neurofeedback gave me the objective roadmap I needed to stop fighting my brain and start retraining it.
Learning to Work With My System
While I’m still a work in progress, I started actively fighting the lie that I don't have time for rest. I realized that taking two minutes to breathe actually makes me more productive. (Though the ultimate goal isn't productivity, it’s nervous system health!)
I also started working on my sleep hygiene. If my brain wasn't slowing down on its own, how could I support it instead of fighting it? Shocker: putting my phone away at night helped immensely. Another total game changer is using binaural beats to give my brainwaves the right cues. By listening to low alpha and delta binaural beats at night my brain shifted into rest. No melatonin required! Listening to alpha binaural beats during the day helps when I need to focus.
What a Neurofeedback Session Actually Looks Like
If you’ve never tried neurofeedback, don’t worry, there are no needles, shocks, or scary machines involved! It’s completely non-invasive. A headband and small sensor is placed on your head and scalp to monitor your brain wave activity in real-time. While you sit back and watch a video, the system gives your brain gentle feedback whenever it shifts into optimal focus or relaxation. It’s essentially passive, reward-based training for your nervous system.
For me, it’s 20 minutes where I get to watch my favorite YouTubers while my brain gets a little workout. What’s not to like?! I leave the session feeling relaxed, grounded, and ready to move into the next thing with calm, not frantically rushing through a to-do list.
The Power of Micro-Transitions
This brings me to my final point: the power of transitions.
As the new school year approaches, many of us are about to enter a season of constant context-switching. But it’s usually not the long to-do list that wears us down, it’s the total lack of transition between tasks. We just jump. We go straight from finishing a work task, to cleaning the apartment, to folding laundry, to a workout class, to making dinner.
What if we claimed the minute in between?
What if, instead of carrying frantic energy into the next task, we paused for a one-minute 5-finger trace?
I learned this technique recently and have been obsessed with it because it incorporates multiple senses. Try it right now:
Extend your non-dominant hand in front of you, palm facing away.
Place your dominant index finger at the outer base of your thumb (near your wrist).
Inhale as you trace up your thumb to the tip; exhale as you trace down the other side.
Inhale up your index finger, exhale down. Continue all the way across to your pinky, ending at the opposite side of your wrist.
The goal isn't just focusing on your breath; it's actively feeling the physical touch of your finger against your skin. It’s multimodal grounding, and it’s a total game-changer.
Moving Forward With Intention
I’m not sitting here claiming I’ve mastered the art of grounding, sleep hygiene, or seamless transitions. But I have begun building a toolkit that supports a more balanced, resilient nervous system.
Remember: Hustle culture is not your friend. It tricks us into believing busyness equals worth, but it’s really just a fast track to burnout. You almost always have one minute to transition between tasks, it’s up to you to choose whether to take it.
Self-care doesn't always have to be a spa day, a massage, or a long bubble bath. Most of the time, it’s built into the micro-moments. It’s taking back your time instead of letting your schedule dictate your peace.
Affirmations to Combat Hustle Culture:
Rest and recovery are essential parts of the progress towards a successful and happy life.
Slowness is a strength, not a weakness.
I lead with intention, not urgency.
Being busy is not a personality trait.
I get the same success whether I hustle or not. I’m just happier when I don’t hustle.
