Filling your cup doesn’t have to take hours, even small windows of time several times a day will make a difference. The more we show up for ourselves, the easier it will be to show up for others.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One last way to show yourself love could be taking your mental health into your own hands. It is very easy for our mental health to feel out of our control. You are not alone and there are supports out there to help you hold that weight. Ways to improve your mental health can include leaning on your support system, engaging in support groups, practicing mindfulness, and going to therapy. You are not expected to handle everything on your own and leaning on your support system is a great way to show yourself a little love and self-compassion.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Understanding Family Therapy: How Relationships Shape Mental Health - Understanding Family Systems Theory</image:title>
<image:caption>There are many different modalities and approaches to family therapy, but each approach is guided by Family Systems Theory. Family therapists view families as a “family system”. This is a way to conceptualize how families function as an interconnected group where each family member has an impact on family functioning. Similarly, the family system has an impact on individual functioning. Rather than viewing a family member’s behavior as an isolated event, behavior is viewed as interconnected to and influenced by the individual’s family system (Guise, 2009). Family Systems Theory helps us to understand why family has such a profound impact on our individual mental health, and how working with family members together in therapy can help to create positive change.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Reducing the Stigma: Embracing Neurodiversity and Understanding Autism - The Hidden Cost of Camouflaging</image:title>
<image:caption>The way many people on the spectrum deal with their diagnosis is by camouflaging. Some people on the spectrum attempt to mask their traits and do their best to appear more “normal” or neurotypical. According to Jones, Langley, & Turnock (2022), camouflaging can be quite a taxing feat on those who are on the spectrum and therefore results in greater fatigue and worse mental health. They also may feel less seen, less understood, and not able to be who they truly are. This can result in many feelings, such as isolation and loneliness. The goal of using camouflaging is to avoid the stigma surrounding autism. It prevents having to engage with the negative aspects of others “discovering” the diagnosis, potentially treating them differently, or having their social space be impacted in some way.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Medicine of Autumn: Five Ways to Nourish Yourself This Season - Here are five things I want you to do for yourself this autumn season:</image:title>
<image:caption>Move your body: whether it’s a slow and steady stroll, a short bike ride, a yoga class, pickle ball, Pilates, stretching, lifting, running, or hiking, make time for intentional movement. Make time for your physical health. Consistent and moderate exercise go a long way. Exercise facilitates emotional and hormonal regulation. Are you mad? Exercise. Are you sad? Move. Are you anxious? Walk it out! Are you stressed out? Lift weights! Feeling disconnected? Try a yoga class with a friend! Think of exercise as medicine. Get outside: before the days get shorter, try to get outside as much as you can! Soak up the sun and get your vitamin D on. Think of the sun and fresh air as medicine. Spend intentional time with the people you love and cherish: Reach out to someone and find opportunities to connect this season. Healthy and close relationships are essential for overall well-being. Share what’s on your mind, ask questions, talk about your hopes, your fears, your plans and your joy. Think of friendship and companionship as medicine. Ground yourself: there are many ways we can help ourselves feel more present and safe in our daily lives. In a society that thrives off of emotional reactivity, consumerism and an “I’m right and you’re wrong” kind of mentality, it’s easy to get swept up in the division, chaos and stress of it all. So PLEASE, do yourself a favor and turn off the news notifications for a week, maybe even a month. Spend less time on social media and make more time for: deep breaths, meditation, laughter, and quality time. Paint, dance, sing, create, whatever it is that makes you feel alive and present. Embrace: Embrace who you are and the uniqueness you bring to the community around you. Honor the individuality of each person you interact with, for we never truly know what someone else is going through. Personally, I am a big fan of complimenting others, whether it be strangers at the gym or the grocery store, or my closest friends, embrace genuine kindness! Embrace genuine compassion. Think of kindness and compassion as medicine.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Brianna Kraus A proud Colorado native, Brianna was born in Steamboat Springs and grew up in the Littleton/Centennial area. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from Drake University and her Master’s of Science in Acupuncture from Southwest Acupuncture College. Brianna first started receiving acupuncture treatments at the age of 16, after a strong flu-like illness left her anxious, depressed, and chronically exhausted. Although all Western tests came back normal, these results left Brianna feeling frustrated by a lack of effective solutions. However, through acupuncture, Brianna not only felt happier and more energetic, but she also felt heard and validated by her acupuncturist. Later in life, these positive early experiences inspired Brianna to pursue a career in acupuncture. She now specializes in the treatment of stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, women’s health (including cycle regulation, fertility, prenatal/postnatal care, and menopause), and musculoskeletal pain. She strives to educate, support, and validate her patients, and, above all, make them feel better. To schedule a session with Brianna, please visit our Acupuncture page at this link.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I have been trained in EMDR for years and receive consultation around EMDR. I have done EMDR with so many clients. Still, I have these moments of awe when I see just how EMDR affects the body. I often say to clients that I wish I could video them during EMDR so they could see their body releasing the trauma, stress, and tension. Our bodies hold onto trauma, plain and simple. After completing EMDR, clients reported reduced physical ailments, such as back pain or shoulder pain.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How do the Struggles of Depression and Anxiety Change Our Daily Lives? - Depression and anxiety can make living your day-to-day life very difficult. It can be caused by many different factors. Trauma, loss of a loved one, lack of support or love, and more. Depression looks different for everyone. People can hide how they are truly feeling really well in social settings. You would never think that the funniest kid in school would be struggling, but you never know what they do when they are alone. When dealing with depression and anxiety, the things you used to love might start to feel like a chore. Going through the motions, but not mentally focused. When the anxiety takes over, and you get trapped in your own thoughts, it feels like you are on a mind roller coaster. Sometimes, small inconveniences can trigger something from the past such as, hearing yelling at the TV for sports. Even though it is not the same type of yelling or violence, the sound of yelling can trigger your PTSD.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How do the Struggles of Depression and Anxiety Change Our Daily Lives? - How I Gained my Self-Love Back</image:title>
<image:caption>Some things I found that were super helpful to gain self-love, is to truly take care of yourself. Even if all you do in a day is brush your hair and teeth, that is still a form of self-care. Taking time to yourself, whether it be taking yourself to go get food, watching the sunset alone, taking a drive, even a nice long shower are all things that help you connect with yourself. I really enjoy doing skincare, so that is my favorite form of self-care.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How do the Struggles of Depression and Anxiety Change Our Daily Lives? - This is a message to remind you… Take care of yourself before anything else. You are enough, you are worthy, you are beautiful, and don’t let the wrong people tell you otherwise. It’s time to walk away, block, and remove yourself from anything negative in your life. I promise, it is not worth feeling worthless, just for someone to love you. You are more than that. You deserve true happiness and sometimes people come into our lives to teach us lessons and all we can do is thank them for that.</image:title>

<image:caption>There are a vast array of therapeutic modalities used by mental health counselors across the globe. At Movement Counseling + Wellness, our therapists integrate a multitude of modalities depending on the client’s needs. If you are actively seeking counseling services, currently engaged in counseling, or simply curious, here are just a few commonly utilized and empirically based modalities offered at Movement Counseling + Wellness.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Identifying Different Therapeutic Modalities - Who Am I?</image:title>
<image:caption>My name is Rachel Monroe and I work at Movement Counseling + Wellness as a therapist. I work with adolescents and adults for individual therapy and co-facilitate a weekly process group called, Teen Talk. In my work with clients, I tend to integrate components from each of the modalities listed above, as well as Narrative Therapy and Depth Psychology, utilizing principles related to story-telling, re-authoring of one’s personal narrative and existentialism. I believe in approaching healing from a holistic lens, integrating all parts of a person into the therapeutic process, including the body, mind, and heart. I have passions for physical movement/fitness, nutrition and connecting with nature as means for emotional regulation, spiritual health and a sense of being grounded.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What is Play Therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>To put it simply, Play Therapy is working with children, usually in the age range of 3-12, using play to explore therapeutic concepts rather than talk. For adults and teenagers, we have language to explore our feelings and our experiences in a meaningful way, this is not the case for young children. Children can lack the emotional vocabulary and the capacity for a fifty minute session where they are forced to talk to an adult with no other engaging stimulation, so we use play as in intermediary to the therapeutic work. Common play can include cards, board games, physical activity like catch or basketball, sword fighting, hitting a punching bag, hide and seek, blowing bubbles, making art, the list goes on and on, it is in the name, we play!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What is Play Therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>In Child-Centered Play Therapy, a main focus is for the therapist to provide a safe, and consistent environment for the client. The therapist remains the same from week to week and is not there to punish or shame or judge, simply support. The client can feel safe, comfortable, and supported, knowing that the therapist will be the same as they were every other time. As with all therapy, what is most important with Child-Centered Play therapy is the relationship and trust between the client and the therapist.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What is Play Therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>It is important to note that Play Therapy is typically a longer process than what one would see with adults. Play Therapy can require repetition and the building of the relationship can take longer than with adults, a central component of all therapy. This can be a frustrating fact for many parents, but again, research has shown time and time again that Play Therapy is in fact effective.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My name is Dunnavin McMunigal, I work at Movement Counseling and Wellness as a therapist. I mainly work with children, teens, and young adults. I am a fairly new therapist having graduated during the summer of 2023, but I believe that I bring passion and a desire to learn each day to constantly be improving. Here at Movement Counseling and Wellness, we have multiple therapists who work with children and teenagers. I personally operate from a Child-Centered perspective while also bringing in directive activities that feel appropriate for the client and their concerns. I love my work and try to operate from a fully genuine place. I am supportive and fully myself so that my clients can feel natural and comfortable within the room.</image:caption>
